Running Is My Meditation – Don’t Sit Around, Move Something!

Yesterday I did a 10 mile run. Two days before that a 6.2 mile run.

This morning I ran over the Golden Gate Bridge in the early morning sunrise.
It was utterly gorgeous and I felt such a sense of freedom.
I run approximately 25 miles per week. That’s 100 miles a month at least.
I have run 446 miles this year so far. All my runs have been in the morning.
My best running time is 11am when it’s warm, preferably sunny.
I’m 59 years old.
I am fitter than I have ever been as an adult.
I’m pretty fast for an older guy. I average 9 minutes per mile and my average length of run is 5.1 miles.
My app tells me I’m usually in the top 8% for distance run.

I am motivated for running.
For me it’s physical and spiritual. It’s even a kind of meditation.
It gets me into a zone. It helps me sweat. It enlivens me. It brings a great spaciousness to my mind.
I connect with some deep inspiration when I run.
I feel it enliven my cellular body.
It doesn’t feel like a stretch in a bad way, ever.

But it really hasn’t always been like this. In fact it was the opposite for years and years.
I was the most unfit guy ever during my 20s and 30s, and even my 40s.
It has taken years of persistence and success, and failure, to get to this point.
And still I have to persist. But I found the groove and know the rewards.

And don’t forget:
I have been through chronic illness, on a long journey that lasted about 10 years. Some of that time I ran, but I struggled with exercise. I stayed with it. When the body and nervous system is under par and stressed it’s very hard to get the full benefit of exercise. So you do what you can. I did rebounding to keep the energy flowing. I did yoga for flexibility. I did core strength exercises to build muscle. All of this you can do, adapted to your own state of health.

The bottom line is, you can’t recover or heal or find true vitality without doing something for the body.
If nothing else, walking is great! 5 – 10 miles a day will get things going. Just don’t sit around. It will kill you.
Sleep is so very important, good quality sleep. We go to bed very early and get up very early.
Hydration is very important.
Nutrition is vital.

But of all things I have seen and felt over the years, enthusiasm and motivation are the two most powerful. With those on your side anything is possible.

Anything.

Thanks for reading, see you out there!

More FREE than the BODY

More FREE than the BODY.

This is an issue that many people who are chronically sick and suffering pain bring to Amoda’s spiritual Satsang meetings seeking an answer that really delivers.
It is a tough question when there is constant pain and endless illness.
‘What do I do?’
‘How do I cope?”
‘I know I am not the body but it hurts so much I never have any peace.’
‘I am scared, angry, anxious.’
‘How do I deal with pain?’

These are some of the questions.

Here is my only insightful response to those questions, and it is my own challenge and endeavor. And it is tough.

TO BE MORE FREE AS CONSCIOUSNESS THAN THE BODY.

If that sounds weird, or impossible, I understand. But its what we are going to be propelled towards at the time of death anyway. At the time of death we are not given an option. We are pushed, dragged, or thrown towards freedom from the body. We can hang on all we like but at some point we must let go of it.
At that point we will realize WE ARE NOT THE BODY.
WE ARE CONSCIOUSNESS.
YOU are consciousness that has a body to live in this relative world. You cannot live here without it.
But it is not who you are.

SO. If it were possible to realize that fundamental truth, that you are not the body, while you are in the body, not theoretically but viscerally, you would be MORE FREE THAN THE BODY.

And as that freedom you would care much less about it.
You would not grasp as it as you might do.
You would not feel as anxious or scared about it.
You would, in fact, allow it to do its thing much more.

In fact your capacity to love yourself would increase dramatically.

It might have an impact on your nervous system and immune system.

But you would have that most sacred quality.

FREEDOM.

What I have just said is tough. It is about enlightenment, true awakening, surrender, humility, grace, and the deepest love.

I hope you understand. This is where I am at.

Worrying about things that don’t happen – is catastrophic for the body

I just wrote this post on Facebook and it was my most popular! Is everyone suffering from this?

Worrying about things that don’t happen is one of the chief causes of adrenal stress, immune compromise and nervous system meltdown.
It is not only a spiritual issue. It is a mental and emotional issue, and very much a physical one.
There you have it, a truly holistic experience!
I know this syndrome intimately as I have been very vulnerable to it most of my life and have now largely ‘tamed’ it. It comes with a ‘vata’ disposition, according to Ayurveda. (The vata dosa, or body type, is prone to anxiety and fear)

Worrying about things that don’t happen is a fixation that must be met with openness and willingness to face the fear. We feed it the fuel it wants by turning away from it or being overly reactive to it. We lose our discernment and become hyper anxious.

That hyper anxiety hits the body hard, and is ultimately useless and destructive.

I recently returned from a trip to the east coast of USA. We accidentally got my name wrong on the flight booking, and that caused me considerable anxiety. I imagined they wouldn’t let me on the flight. I actually became quite stressed about the whole thing. Add to that I thought our luggage was over weight, and we didn’t have enough time to get everything done and I was all over the place!

Guess what? It was a big lesson.
a. They didn’t care about the name and changed it in a moment.
b. The luggage was fine.
c. We had loads of time and were still at the airport early.
d. I stressed over absolutely nothing.

Luckily I have learned not to take out this anxiety on anyone else, particularly loved ones. I keep it to myself as much as possible.

But the point I’m making is I worried about things that didn’t happen. And it began to screw around with my body.
Acute anxiety or chronic anxiety, it doesn’t matter, it still degrades the body integrity and must be met with softness and love.

The effect of this unnecessary worry on the body can be catastrophic. From adrenal fatigue to ramped up immune system, to liver tightness, high cortisol levels, risk of heart attack, rashes, and serious digestive problems, this is not some minor issue. Even cancer may be fueled by major worry.

It is a chronic and societal problem that must be faced individually and collectively.

What can you do?

You can do so much to reduce this heavyweight problem.

All endeavors will help. Here are some ideas that I use.

Meditation. Spending time in nature. Exercise. Relaxation.Visualization.
Spiritual inquiry. Healing old wounds and traumas. Understanding one’s mind and belief systems.
Magnesium. Detoxification. Nourishment with healthy and organic vegetables and salads.
Decreasing acidic and stimulating foods and drinks. NO COCA COLA!
Love.

Let me know what you think, or whether you worry about things that don’t happen and what strategies you employ, if any, to help reduce it’s damaging effects.

Just How Connected To Our Environment Are We?

This one question is the source of constant inquiry to me. It is that important, and that mysterious, I just can’t believe it. And I honestly do believe that if we could see and know the truth of our relationship to our environment, we would be shocked to the core and change instantly.

But first I have to answer another question. What do I mean by ‘environment?’

Let me be clear here I am not talking about ‘nature’ or ‘environmental issues.’ Of course that is very important, and very related, but I am talking specifically here about consciousness and form.
I mean more on the level, to use a metaphor, of the goldfish and the water. By environment I mean the space we exist in, our reality (or what we take for reality), and interact with, and of course that includes earth activity, weather, sun and moon activity and planetary movements.

We imagine ourselves to be separate from the world and each other.  You can feel where your body ends and the world begins. You know the world through your senses, 5 (usually) coherent messengers that feed impulses and signals to your brain that your brain interprets as ‘the world’ and makes necessary adjustments.

But what happens if you are not actually receiving the whole picture? What is beyond the perception and interpretation? Nothing? Is there such a thing as ‘nothing?’ Is it as convincing as we believe?

We understand through science and quantum science that everything is comprised of energy at the quark level. The whole shebang is energy in movement, in flux. And we further understand from quantum experiments  (the double-slit experiment) that this energy field, which includes us and everything around us, responds to thought and belief, intention and desire. It actually seems to respond to who we are at our deepest level, not just what we think or feel on the surface of life.

Furthermore it looks as though we are all engaged in a consensus reality, a matrix if you will, a virtual experience that has certain fixed parameters and we get to experience it as our reality.

Please be clear at this point. I am exploring, not giving a thesis. I am not a researcher, a scientist or a quantum guy. I don’t have a clue, but I am fascinated by this subject.

Here is why. Because I FEEL completely hard wired to most of their reality we live in, and SOFT wired to the rest of it.

I mean hard wired in the sense that when I walk down the street like you I see shops, cars, people, road etc etc.

Soft wired becomes more subtle and unique to each of us. I ‘feel’ energy and vibration when I go to certain places. I am aware of  a feeling within me that doesn’t feel as though its mine. It can be subtle but I have learned to open to it. It helps to open to it as impersonal (without shirking my own responsibility for what I feel).

Further more I believe that I ‘feel’ earth-life. I feel thunderstorms, earthquake activity, moon-pull. I feel solar activity, as I know many people do, and I feel astrological pulls and pushes all the time.

And I ‘feel’ people. Some folks feel other people more than others. But they definitely do. I have also experienced many times a certain ‘telepathy’ with my wife, where I say instantly exactly the thing she is thinking. This has happened hundreds of times, and is now beyond shocking us. THAT SUGGESTS THERE IS MORE TO OUR EXPERIENCE THAN WE CURRENTLY UNDERSTAND.

I am not unusual in any of this. But what may be unusual is that I listen and take notice. I trust myself and am willing to open to what is happening, even though I might not understand it.

It is one of the things that makes me a good coach and guide. I ‘feel’ my clients and where they are at.

It is my claim that we are blinded by our own perception, and interpretation of our perception, and we do ourselves and the apparent world a great disservice by our ignorance.

We take the picture we experience to be THE WHOLE PICTURE, and that is one of our greatest errors.

Consider what happens to consciousness, to our experience of reality, in the deepest state of meditation, or in a flotation tank, or under the influence of certain psychedelic drugs.
It changes, fundamentally. And what has until that point seemed so real suddenly and often overwhelmingly no longer does so. Suddenly everything may appear connected to everything else, and it is as though ‘the doors of perception’ themselves have been opened and we see the truth that it is IMPOSSIBLE to define what is ‘out there’ as reality and what is not.

That awareness changes your life completely.

This post is a simple and basic discussion of this point. I would LOVE to hear from you and know what you have experienced and what you believe. I hope it has prompted some contemplation and even a rethink of where you are at.

New PODCAST – Being Authentic in a World of Lies and Falsehood, with a Meditation

Hi! Take a look at my new podcast cover.
What do you think?

I like it and I’m pleased with the direction of these podcasts.

And so here is a new one.
Click on the image to listen on iTunes.

It is all about our authenticity and why it matters.

‘You can’t wait for the world to change before you take off the mask of falseness and live as your authentic self.
What this means is exposing yourself, discovering and meeting all your inner wounds and pain, and opening willingly to that vulnerable part of yourself.
Each time we wear the mask, or coat, of falseness, it causes us pain. And that pain can last a lifetime.
But there is a deep yearning to remove all the falseness and be open, real and free.
It sounds easy but in practice it can be very painful and scary.

This PODCAST is all about that journey to becoming your true and free authentic self.’

It includes a meditation to help bring awareness and presence to your inner world.

Here it is on Soundcloud:

Don’t Just Do Something, Lie There

BODY INTELLIGENCE – Don’t Intervene Too Early

If at all possible, and you will have to experiment with this, try and let the body ‘do its thing’ without intervention.
It may be what is needed, and you could be overriding the natural movement of the body to heal.

We live in the age of rapid intervention.
I really believe we jump too soon because we have lost touch with our inner wisdom on the inside and our ability to treat ourselves with the right foods on the outside.

So we jump to intervention way too soon. Maybe its right and maybe its wrong.
The reason I say this is that most holistically minded healers, doctors and lay people consider the body mind system as self healing and super intelligent.
That means that when something goes out of balance the body will seek to rectify it.
Our task is to support that process. Not to intervene unless we absolutely have to.

Consider the animals and birds. All of them do the same thing if they get ill. NOTHING. They crawl away and pretty much stop eating and just wait. And they either get well or they die.

Now, we don’t have to crawl away and it doesn’t have to be that black or white, but its a good lesson in the power of non intervention.
And then if we must intervene, and very often we definitely need to, we must intervene intelligently. Thats a whole another story.

This is the essence of water fasting. Water fasting is actually not something you DO. It is the cessation of doing. That is one of the reasons we fail to understand its power or healing potential. We are so hooked up to the DOING SOMETHING paradigm that not doing something seems absurd.

But water fasting is proof that sometimes this non doing is exactly what is required. In the non doing of fasting the body starts to follow a pattern. It begins to change its focus and starts to clean house.

And that impacts the mind and emotions. It becomes a process – a cathartic and transformative process. Just by doing nothing. When mind has to stop, all it’s hidden shadows, its dark corners, are revealed.

It is the same with the silent retreats my wife AMODA MAA, runs. In the silence, that runs for between 5 and 10 days, the mind starts to scream for activity. It becomes quite desperate for something to occupy it. When this craving is not fed, something else starts to happen. What has been hidden and avoided comes to the surface for healing.

It is quite a dramatic experience, and nearly always brings an increased self knowledge, wisdom, and humility to people. It becomes a relief to do nothing and allow things to find their own way.

So if this non doing works on the mind level in spiritual retreat, and it works on the body level in fasting, why is NON DOING not really popular?

It is proof that we are far away from our living truth. When we are sick we go first to the doctor. Thats it for most people. They leave with the meds and never ever consider alternative actions or natural remedies, let alone nothing!

And very few people treat their depression, anxiety or anger by going to silent retreats or meditation.

No, we do not live in a society that values nothing. Maybe thats beginning to change. There are more spiritual gatherings than ever. There are more fasting centers, more health options than ever before, and more and more people are turning towards natural healing methods.

So something is happening. Or rather, NOTHING is HAPPENING!

PLEASE consider this.

The Holistic Map of Your Life and How to Read It.

THE HOLISTIC MAP OF YOUR LIFE.

Your body is the manifestation of your consciousness.
Its what you we’re given to journey through life with. It contains and holds everything that has happened to you since you arrived here. It carries the imprint of your parents, grandparents, great grand parents and so on and on back into the mystery of your past.
0bc4fc1e64b4d5863aa12349a1dc1a95It holds the secrets of life, encoded into its DNA. It is still utterly mysterious to us, but it is supremely intelligent and has capacities and potential to heal or create illness, far beyond our current understanding. Never doubt its capabilities.

It sends you messages you may not be hearing accurately.
It is in reciprocal relationship with your mind, emotions and spirit. Always always bear this in mind.

Your spirit is that purest, eternal and unchanging part of you you are born from, and return to when your body dies.
It is also who you really are while you are here in existence. It doesn’t change just because you we’re born.

Remembering your true nature as freedom and consciousness is the most profound healing that can happen, because it liberates you from attachment, need and fear of annihilation. Realising your true nature has a powerful impact on the physical body. It relaxes the nervous system and immune system. It resolves into love.

Love has the power to heal, even to transform dis-ease to ease in the body.

If you want to imagine it, think of your spirit as the highest aspect of your self, and your body as the lowest aspect of your self. Or your spirit as the lightest and the body as the densest.

And there are things that block the free flow of energy from the highest to the lowest.

They are called Emotions. Yes, thats right, emotions, (and I included thoughts and beliefs of the mind in this) can easily be the number one cause of imbalance, disharmony and dis-ease.

Spiritual energy has to flow into and through the physical body, and if it becomes impeded and blocked, its going to cause problems to the whole being, to the whole of you.

The emotional blocks, wounds, traumas, thoughts and beliefs, are usually things carried from the past that become stuck in the physical/emotional body until they are consciously released. Most people do not consciously release them ever, and so carry them for a lifetime.
The body has tremendous powers to cope with these traumas. It works with them and around them. UP TO A POINT. As you get older the body gets weaker, and the attrition gets deeper and more chronic. Thats when trouble sets in. It becomes a systemic breakdown of the whole of you.

Its when physicals illness sets in, depression happens, bitterness and discontent rise to the surface, and resignation easily happens.
Thats the unfortunate outcome we want to avoid.

And it can be rectified and healed.
It is never too late to change things. It is never too late to become harmonious again. In fact its our destiny to do so.

salad 2How?

It means you have to develop a strong desire to become wise.
It means you have to be prepared to face and let go of things you may have carried for years.
It might be time to let go of grievances you have had.
The way to start is to be willing.
Attending to the body is vital, and that means clearing up diet and movement.
It means detoxifying and nourishing.

But quickly you will find it also means clearing up the toxic emotions connected to your inner life. This can be done by simple awareness, certain useful techniques, breathing and conscious awareness.

This is the nature of Holistic Healing.  Each journey is unique, and has its own footprint. There are maps. First you need the willingness and then you need to take one step at a time on your unique path.
